Morpeth Music Society concert: Piatti Quartet with pianist Simon Callaghan

Anonymous

Vaughan Williams String Quartet No 1 in G minor
Schumann Piano Quartet in E flat major Op. 47
Dvořák Piano Quintet no 2 in A major Op. 81

Named after Alfredo Piatti - a 19th century virtuoso cellist - the Piatti Quartet are currently the Resident Quartet at Kings Place in London. Critically acclaimed, the musicians enjoy performing both mainstream and less familiar repertoire, often collaborating with other leading chamber musicians. For our Morpeth concert, they will be performing with pianist Simon Callaghan, a highly regarded soloist and chamber musician as well his roles as the artistic director of the Conway Hall and teaching at the Royal Northern College of Music.

The programme for Morpeth opens with Vaughan Williams' early 20th century string quartet followed by Schumann's piano quartet for violin, viola, cello and piano both works being lushly romantic in style. Considered to be a masterpiece, Dvořák's quintet in A major will continue this recital building on the lyrical mood with his characteristic folk inspired themes.

on Ravel's String Quartet in F major ' ...the Piattis made the most of its vividly kaleidoscopic shimmering texture. It’s hard to imagine a finer performance, spikily percussive in the pizzicato-led second movement, then silkily dreamy in the slow-breathed third.'
