Mozart, Mendelssohn and Schumann

Anonymous

Finchley Symphony Orchestra and conductor Christopher Stark will perform classical and romantic favourites for their May concert.
‘Ruy Blas’ by Victor Hugo is a violent play; Mendelssohn’s overture, written in just three days, is suitably dramatic.
Ukrainian violinist Valeriy Sokolov is one of the outstanding artists of his generation. He came to the Menuhin school from Kharkiv aged 13 and performed several concertos with FSO before going on to appear with the Philharmonia, Royal Philharmonic, Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Cleveland Orchestra and many others. We are delighted to welcome him back to play Mozart’s sublime Sinfonia Concertante in partnership with Paul Zientara, an international prize winner who often works with Renaud Capuçon with whom he has also performed this piece.
Schumann’s D minor symphony was a radical departure for him. Written originally a year after his marriage (but later revised) it forms an integrated whole whose musical span is in turn brooding, melancholy, heroic and thrilling.
